Jammin' J Automotive & Tire - Overland, MO Back to Location List
When you’re on the hunt for new tires, speed rating might not factor into your decision. Still, it’s worth knowing the top rated speed for your tires. You can find this information on the sidewall, where you’ll also find information on your tire size and load capacity. You should look for around 12 characters (letters and numbers) that look something like this: P225 / 55R18 97T
The last letter is the speed rating. In this example, the tire has a T rating. To understand what this means, you need to know how the speed rating system works. A tire can have a rating anywhere between A and Z. All letters correspond to a tire speed ratings chart where you can see what letter equals how many miles per hours. Tires are also rated so that the top speed advances as the letters of the alphabet advance (with a few exceptions). Consulting a chart online for the example tire shows that the letter T usually corresponds with 118 mph.
In most everyday applications, you won’t need to worry about coming near a tire’s top rated speed, but it’s good information to know. For all cases, you should follow the speed limit for your safety and the safety of other motorists on the road.
