In most states, you need 2/32” minimum tread remaining to drive on the road legally. Tread depth in important for several reasons. One is performance in rain and wet conditions. A tire with low tread can’t channel water out as efficiently as a tire with moderate to heavy tread. That means you have a higher risk of hydroplaning with low tread and bald tires. Another reason is puncture resistance. Less tread makes it easier for nails and other road hazards to penetrate your tires and leave you on the roadside with a flat.
